Amrit Manthan was performed by the Devas and Asuras to obtain Amrit, the divine nectar of immortality, from the ocean. Both sides desired this sacred nectar. During the churning, many precious treasures emerged — but so did a deadly poison powerful enough to destroy all life. To save the universe, Lord Shiva drank the poison. As it burned within Him, Maa Tara appeared and fed Him her divine milk, relieving His pain and protecting creation.
