Nestled in the sacred town of Vrindavan, where divine love echoes in every corner, the Katyayani Peeth stands as a powerful symbol of feminine divinity and Shakti worship. Unlike most temples in Vrindavan that primarily glorify Lord Krishna and Radha Rani, Katyayani Peeth is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, making it a rare and spiritually potent destination in this land of bhakti.
According to Hindu mythology, the Katyayani Peeth marks the holy spot where the hair of Goddess Sati is believed to have fallen. This incident is linked to the ancient story of Sati’s self-immolation at her father Daksha's yagna and the grief-stricken Lord Shiva carrying her charred body across the universe. From the places where her body parts fell emerged 51 sacred Shakti Peethas—each a divine center of Shakti worship.
In this particular Peeth, the Goddess is worshipped as Katyayani Devi, and Lord Shiva is worshipped as Bhadreshwar.
Goddess Katyayani is the sixth form of Goddess Durga, known for her fierce power, protection, and compassion. In the Bhagavata Purana, she is revered by the Gopis of Vrindavan, who worshipped her to obtain Lord Krishna as their beloved. This tradition connects her deeply to the spiritual essence of Vrindavan.
It is said that the Gopis made an idol of Goddess Katyayani from river clay and worshipped her on the banks of the Yamuna during Margashirsha month, asking for Krishna as their eternal consort. Hence, this temple is not only a Shakti Peeth but also a sacred place in Krishna Leela.
The Katyayani Temple in Vrindavan is serene yet majestic. The sanctum houses the idol of Katyayani Devi, adorned in beautiful red garments and jewelry, radiating power and motherly grace. The temple is surrounded by a peaceful courtyard and shrines of other deities including Lord Shiva as Bhadreshwar, Lakshmi Narayan, Sita Ram, Radha Krishna, Durga, and Hanuman ji.
The temple atmosphere is calm, ideal for meditation and quiet devotion. The spiritual vibrations are strong, especially during Navratri, when devotees gather in large numbers to offer prayers and seek blessings.
Katyayani Peeth witnesses vibrant celebrations during:
Navratri – Nine nights of Devi worship, devotional music, and special rituals.
Durga Ashtami & Vijayadashami – Celebrating the victory of good over evil.
Kartik Month – Especially sacred in Vrindavan, attracting thousands of pilgrims.
Daily worship includes morning and evening aarti, special pujas, and chanting of Devi stotras. The temple priests also perform Katyayani Vrata puja, a tradition inspired by the Gopis, for unmarried girls seeking divine blessings for an ideal marriage.
The temple is located near Atalla Chungi, Vrindavan, and is accessible by road, e-rickshaw, or auto from the Vrindavan town center or Mathura Railway Station (approx. 12 km). Its peaceful surroundings make it a refreshing and spiritually uplifting stop for every visitor.
To connect with the divine feminine energy in a land known for divine love.
To witness the unique blend of Shakti and Bhakti traditions in one place.
To participate in the age-old Katyayani Vrata, rooted in Krishna’s pastimes.
Whether you seek strength, devotion, healing, or spiritual awakening, Katyayani Peeth is a place of grace and power—a rare gem in Vrindavan's crown.
