Baijnath Temple, Bageshwar
Nestled in the serene Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, along the banks of the Gomati River, the Baijnat...
At the sacred confluence of the Saryu and Gomati rivers in the picturesque town of Bageshwar, stands the majestic Baghnath Temple — a timeless shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, revered locally as Baghnath, the "Tiger God." This ancient temple is not just a place of worship; it is the spiritual heart of Kumaon, where myth, devotion, and Himalayan beauty come together.
The name “Baghnath” translates to “Lord of the Tigers”. According to local legends, Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a tiger at this very spot to bless the great sage Markandeya, who had been meditating here. The place was thus named Baghnath, symbolizing Shiva’s fierce, protective, and powerful form.
This legend adds to the mystique and divine energy that permeates the region, making it one of the holiest sites in the Kumaon Himalayas.
The Baghnath Temple was built in 1602 AD by Chand ruler Laxmi Chand. However, references to the temple site and its sanctity date back to medieval and even Vedic times, with the confluence being regarded as highly auspicious.
