Baijnath Temple, Bageshwar
Nestled in the serene Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, along the banks of the Gomati River, the Baijnat...
In the pristine Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, where the air is thick with pine scent and devotion, lies a unique and powerful temple dedicated to Golu Devta, the legendary deity known as the "God of Justice". Perched amidst scenic hills in Chitai, near Almora, the Golu Devta Temple is unlike any other shrine in India—a divine court where faith and fairness rule.
Golu Devta is believed to be a manifestation of Lord Shiva, worshipped as a brave and just local deity and king. According to folklore, he was a general and a righteous prince from the Katyuri dynasty, revered for his unwavering sense of justice and protection of the common people.
Over time, his divine spirit became a symbol of truth, justice, and integrity, and he came to be worshipped widely across Kumaon and parts of Garhwal.
The most famous Golu Devta Temple is located at Chitai, about 9 km from Almora, surrounded by forests and panoramic views of the Himalayan valleys.
What makes this temple truly special is its hundreds of thousands of bells—big and small—offered by devotees as symbols of fulfilled wishes and gratitude. Another unique ritual is the offering of written petitions, often on stamped legal paper, submitted by devotees seeking divine intervention in personal and legal matters.
Temple Highlights:
Thousands of brass bells tied across the premises
Written appeals for justice hung on temple walls
Peaceful surroundings ideal for prayer and meditation
Belief in swift divine justice by Golu Devta
Golu Devta is not just worshipped—he is trusted like a divine judge. Devotees often:
Submit written prayers and petitions, similar to legal applications
Offer bells when a wish is granted or justice is received
Perform pujas during Navratri, and special offerings on Wednesdays and Saturdays
It is said that those wrongfully accused or denied justice in courts approach Golu Devta—and he never ignores a sincere plea.

Champawat and Pithoragarh districts, where the legend of Golu Devta began
Each of these shrines shares the common theme of bells and justice, with devotees coming from far and wide with their appeals.
One popular legend states that Golu Devta sacrificed his life for truth and justice. In one version, his head was severed in battle, and he carried it to Gairad (near Binsar) where a shrine was later built. The tale of his martyrdom for dharma (righteousness) still inspires thousands today.
His legacy continues not just in temples, but in the hearts of Kumaonis, who believe truth always triumphs under Golu Devta's watchful eye.
