Katarmal Suryadev Temple

High above the scenic town of Almora in Uttarakhand, nestled amidst pine-covered hills and kissed by the morning sun, stands the Katarmal Surya Dev Temple—a lesser-known yet magnificent tribute to Surya, the Sun God. This 9th-century architectural gem is the second most important Sun temple in India after the renowned Konark Sun Temple in Odisha, yet remains a hidden treasure for most travelers.

A Temple Bathed in Sunlight and Silence

The Katarmal Temple, perched at an altitude of around 2,100 meters, was built by Katyuri King Katarmalla in the 9th century CE. The temple is a fine example of Katyuri architecture, showcasing incredible stone masonry and symmetrical alignment to catch the first rays of the sun.

Surrounded by spectacular views of the Kumaon hills, this temple complex is a marvel of spiritual engineering, history, and Himalayan charm.

Temple Architecture and Layout

The main shrine is dedicated to Surya Dev (Baraditya or Burhaditya), flanked by 45 smaller shrines that honor various other deities including:

  • Shiva

  • Vishnu

  • Lakshmi

  • Parvati

  • Narayan

The temple is built using stone slabs without mortar, with interlocking joints holding the structure together—demonstrating the ancient mastery of architecture.

The intricately carved wooden doors and panels of the original sanctum were so precious they were moved to the National Museum in Delhi for preservation.

Unique Features

  • Solar Alignment: The main sanctum is designed to receive the first sunrays directly on the idol of Surya Dev—similar to the temples at Konark and Modhera.

  • Silent Grandeur: Unlike crowded pilgrimage centers, Katarmal offers spiritual solitude amid majestic Himalayan views.

  • Stone Craftsmanship: The artistic stone carvings reflect the glorious heritage of the Katyuri dynasty.

Significance of Sun Worship

Surya Dev is worshipped as the giver of life, light, and energy. Devotees believe that offering prayers here can:

  • Strengthen vitality and health

  • Bring clarity of mind and soul

  • Heal ailments caused by imbalance of energy

Ancient rituals often involved water offerings (Arghya) at sunrise, along with chanting of Gayatri Mantra.

How to Reach Katarmal Surya Temple

  • Location: ~18 km from Almora, Uttarakhand

  • Nearest Railway Station: Kathgodam (about 90 km)

  • Nearest Airport: Pantnagar Airport (~120 km)

  • Trek: A short 2–3 km uphill trek from the nearest road, passing through scenic mountain trails

Travel Tips

  • Wear trekking shoes – the hike is short but steep

  • Visit during sunrise or early morning to witness the magical light effect

  • Carry a camera – the temple and the panoramic views are photographer’s paradise

  • Best time to visit: March to June & September to November (clear skies and pleasant weather)

A Temple Lost in Time, Waiting to Be Found

The Katarmal Surya Dev Temple is a perfect destination for those seeking heritage with solitude, history with serenity, and faith away from the crowd. It’s where stone meets sun, and where silence speaks louder than chants.

Whether you're a heritage enthusiast, a spiritual seeker, or an offbeat traveler, Katarmal will leave you mesmerized.
