Baijnath Temple, Bageshwar
Nestled in the serene Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, along the banks of the Gomati River, the Baijnat...
Hidden in the mystical hills of Pithoragarh district, Uttarakhand, lies a powerful seat of the divine feminine — the Haat Kalika Temple in Gangolihat. Dedicated to Maa Kali, the fierce and protective form of Goddess Durga, this temple is not just a religious site, but a place where devotion meets raw cosmic energy. It is one of the most revered Shakti Peeths in the Kumaon region and holds great spiritual, historical, and cultural significance.
According to mythology, Adi Shankaracharya, the 8th-century philosopher and saint, established the Shakti Peethas across India to revive Sanatan Dharma. It is believed that he consecrated the Haat Kalika Temple during his journey through the Himalayas. The word “Haat” refers to a sacred place, and “Kalika” refers to Goddess Kali, the ferocious form of Shakti who destroys evil to protect dharma.
The temple is said to have been built on the spot where Goddess Kali appeared before Adi Shankaracharya.
Maa Kalika is worshipped here in her Ugra (fierce) form — adorned with red clothes, silver ornaments, flowers, and weapons. Devotees believe that she grants protection, strength, and victory over enemies. She is especially revered by soldiers, police personnel, and spiritual seekers who pray to her for courage, success, and protection.
Many worshippers report an intense spiritual energy at the site, often describing it as transformative and soul-stirring.
The Haat Kalika Temple is a modest stone structure surrounded by scenic Himalayan views and tall deodar trees. The aura of the temple is marked by:
Constant chanting of mantras and bhajans
The ringing of devotees’ bells
A sense of vibrant spiritual power
The temple premises also include shrines of Lord Bhairav, Lord Shiva, and other deities.
Daily worship includes:
Aarti and Kali Mantra chanting
Offering of red chunari, sindoor, coconut, and flowers
Animal sacrifice (traditionally practiced by some devotees), though this is now discouraged and replaced with symbolic offerings
Festivals like Navratri are celebrated with grandeur, with thousands of devotees visiting from across Uttarakhand and northern India.
