The Legend of Mata Anasuya

Anasuya Mata, the wife of Sage Atri and mother of Dattatreya (an incarnation of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva), is a powerful figure in Hindu mythology known for her unshakable devotion and virtue. According to legend, her spiritual strength was so immense that it could bring even the Trimurtis to earth.

It is believed that when Sati’s body was dismembered by Lord Vishnu’s Sudarshan Chakra to pacify Lord Shiva’s grief, her hips (niti) fell at this very spot in Chamoli, establishing this temple as a Shaktipeeth, one of the 51 divine seats of Goddess Shakti.
