Nestled on the northern shore of the serene Naini Lake in Nainital, Uttarakhand, the Naina Devi Temple is one of the most revered Shakti temples in India. A sacred symbol of Maa Naina Devi, the temple stands as a powerful site of faith, devotion, and divine feminine energy, attracting thousands of devotees and tourists every year.
The temple is associated with the powerful Shaktipeeth legend. According to mythology, when Goddess Sati sacrificed herself at her father Daksha’s yagna, Lord Shiva carried her burning body across the universe. To calm his sorrow, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to cut her body into 51 parts. Wherever the body parts fell, sacred Shaktipeeths were formed.
It is believed that Sati’s eyes (Nayan) fell at the very site where the Naina Devi Temple now stands, giving the temple and the lake the name "Naina" (meaning eyes in Sanskrit). Thus, Maa Naina Devi is worshipped here as the goddess of vision, insight, and protection.
The temple features a simple yet divine structure with a red and white dome and traditional Hindu motifs.
The main sanctum houses three deities:
Maa Naina Devi in the center.
Maa Kali on the left.
Lord Ganesha on the right.
The shrine is adorned with flowers, red chunari, bells, and diya offerings by devotees.
The calm surroundings of Naini Lake, the cool mountain air, and the ringing of temple bells create an atmosphere that is both spiritually uplifting and visually soothing.
Maa Naina Devi is believed to protect Nainital and its people from misfortune and natural disasters.
Devotees pray here for health, wealth, wisdom, and relief from eye-related ailments.
