Perched at an altitude of about 2,757 meters in the Tehri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand, the Surkanda Devi Temple is a revered Shaktipeeth that offers both spiritual bliss and breathtaking Himalayan views. Dedicated to Goddess Surkanda, a fierce form of Maa Durga, the temple is a major pilgrimage site and a scenic trekking destination, located near the popular hill stations of Dhanaulti and Mussoorie.
Surkanda Devi Temple is deeply rooted in the Shaktipeeth lore. According to Hindu mythology, after Goddess Sati immolated herself during her father Daksha's yagna, Lord Shiva roamed the universe with her charred body in grief. To restore balance, Lord Vishnu cut her body into 51 parts with his Sudarshan Chakra.
It is believed that Sati's head fell at this very spot, where the Surkanda Devi Temple now stands. The name "Surkanda" is said to be derived from "Sirkanda" (Sira = head), symbolizing the goddess’s sacrifice and immense power.
The temple is built in traditional North Indian style with a beautifully carved wooden gateway and stone structure.
It stands majestically surrounded by dense forests, snow-capped peaks, and mystic clouds that often create a magical atmosphere.
The sanctum houses the idol of Maa Surkanda, adorned with red clothes, flowers, and offerings from devotees.
The peaceful surroundings and high-altitude setting make it a perfect place for meditation and devotion.
